Ukraine Considering Possibility Of Purchasing Gas From European Country (18:26, Friday, January 27, 2012)

Ukraine is considering the possibility of purchasing natural gas from a European country.

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov wrote this on his Facebook page during communication with Facebook users.

"One of the proposed alternative sources of gas supplies to Ukraine is specifically purchase of gas from a European country," Azarov said.

According to him, the proposal is now being studied from the economic and technical points of view.

However, the prime minister did not name the country.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine has been negotiating with Russia on reduction of gas prices since the middle of 2011.

President Viktor Yanukovych believes that the existing gas contracts with Russia threaten Ukraine's national security.

The National Security and Defense Council estimates Ukraine's annual losses as a result of the existing gas contracts with Russia at USD 5 billion.
